ESET NOD32’s interface does give you a lot more control than many of the others. You can restrict password or Web site access with just a few clicks.

The first thing to love about ESET is the program’s huge and powerful graphical user interface. It’s clean, clear, and offers a lot of options and features. ESETs design, as a whole, feels more like an operating system than an antispyware and security suite. Take this big button in the form of an eyeball, for example. No other suite offers such a well-defined click target. That eyeball offers an instant visual overview of the various settings, licenses, and installation locations on your computer, and this pops up whenever you install a new program.

Yet despite ESETs huge and beautiful graphical user interface, the software has the same clunky look and feel as its predecessors. The threat tree looks like a black and white stick figure created with colored markers, and the checkbox options are no match for the preferences pages in other security suites.

However, ESETs GUI is arguably the best in the business. It’s big and bold, and lets you right-click on a suspicious file to manually launch an antivirus scan. We also appreciated the pop-ups that display in response to actions. For example, if you open a file, the program pops up a box warning that the file could contain a virus. What this means is that your password database is stored in the cloud so that you can access it on any device via the password manager. There is a small fee for online access, but its cheaper than paying for the same feature on a separate package.

As always, ESET is the most comprehensive security suite that I tested. ESET Smart Security offers virus detection and cleaning, anti-theft, parental control, firewall, and encryption. If youre looking for a firewall, you might be better off going with a separate utility from ESET. Although ESET includes a firewall, it doesnt do a particularly good job of blocking threats. When using this suite, I am constantly disappointed when ESETs protection fails to block malware and I have to resort to manually deleting a program. This was especially troublesome when I used ESET on my Mac, where the firewall does not always block trojans and backdoors. ESETs firewall was the strongest firewall of the five I tested.

ESET is also a well-regarded reporting and troubleshooting system, with a very handy Wizard (among ESET’s best) which can locate malware, produce a very readable report (still one of the few on the market that doesn’t strip out keywords, which is a crying shame), and is also a great tool for remote support and system management.

ESET is less good at covering every corner of the security world than the competition, but it’s good at one vital area: antivirus. This is where it shines.

Most importantly, it does all this efficiently, regularly checks itself, and doesn’t have a load of third party junk going on. So if you want an all-round thoroughhouse tool for a PC or laptop, ESET Smart Security is well worth considering.
